When Octopi (sp?) ;) Attack! |
This is amazing footage of a giant octopus attacking an ROV sub.
The incident was caught on the ROV's video by Mike Wood of SubOceanic Sciences Canada. He had just located a data recorder and taken a grip of the cable with the ROV's manipulator arm, when suddenly an 80 lb octopus launched an attack. With tentacles 'as thick as man's arm' and a bite that he believed can exert 1000 lbs pressure, Mike Wood feared the octopus would bite the camera cable or umbilical and trip out the Falcon ROV. Not wanting to lose the receiver that he had just located he decided to take on the creature and after tightening his grip of the cable with the manipulator arm, revved the ROV's thrusters in reverse in an attempt to blast seabed particles at the creature. For a moment the octopus appeared to intensify its attack with its mantle flared but eventually the swirling fragments drove it away. Click here to check it out!

NASA.gov - Return to Flight |
Tollie can't help but say that what NASA does is "incredible." And so, besides telling you that this week's recommended website is www.NASA.gov, I want to point you to specific places on NASA.gov where you can find the really good stuff.
- Discovery over the blue Earth, desktop background: 1024 x 768 or 1280x1024
- Watch NASA TV online
- Liftoff! and Launch.
- Video from a Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) from takeoff to separation (2 minutes in the video) to splashdown.
- Video from the External Tank (ET) as the Orbiter separates.
- Video of the first ever EVA (space walk) under the Shuttle, and removing protruding gap fillers. "It looks like this big patient is cured." Commander Eileen Collins asked Steve to check the oil while he was down there.
- Pictures taken by Steve Robinson while underneath the shuttle.
- Hi-res image taken by the International Space Station (ISS) crew as the shuttle did a backflip at 17000 miles per hour. Looking closely, not only can you see the two protruding gap fillers, but you can also see someone's elbow in the side-window.
- The STS-114 and ISS Expedition 11 crew in the US Destiny lab on the ISS. Check out the wires.
- All the videos, and in three formats. (scroll to the bottom to navigate from page to page)
- Finally - the big high-definition video. The only HD video I've found for free so far, but it's "incredible." Requires installing Quicktime 7. Slower computers should get the 480p version, or the video may be choppy.

Thousands of Free Music Videos |
I was dissapointed to find out that Winamp's built-in Nullsoft (AOL) Video seems to have cut its listing significantly, cutting aritsts and videos that I had previous seen from their list of thousands of free music videos.
Then, I was surprised to see that although they weren't listed, all the videos that I had saved in an old playlist were still available, even though they weren't listed. The lesson? Always bookmark everything you want to revisit - even individual videos.
If you want to see the current list, you can either go to AOL's music channel (works even if you don't have AOL) and play them using the AOL media player in your browser, or download and install Winamp [direct download of non-emusic full version] and access the video list through it's media library under Nullsoft Videos.
If you have Winamp already, here are some videos you can check out. In order to make sure the video plays properly, you will need to
- right-click the links below
- on the menu, copy the shortcut (link)
- open Winamp
- press [CTRL] + [L] to open a URL
- (that means press and hold the [CTRL] key while you tap the [L] key)
- then press [CTYL] + [V] to paste the video's link into the window.
I guess I have an eclectic taste? By the way, since I included some Switchfoot videos, I'll shamelessly link to a blog entry I wrote about them in 2004. I called it "The Case of Californians." |

Superbowl Commercial: Tribute to Soldiers |
A very touching Super Bowl commercial expressing gratitude to our soldiers for their service in Iraq. I hesitate to put it here because it's a beer commercial, but it only mentions it briefly at the end.

Face Ball |
One "friend" very kindly kicks a large blue ball into his friends face....then rejoices when his friend is knocked into a stooper AND he realizes it's been video taped. The friend doesn't seem to mind, though that might be the effects of the concussion kicking in. |
